Connection is King

I walked my dog and saw a man in a wheelchair in icy January. He had spent the night outside. It was too cold to live and too warm to die. I went the extra mile, went home, took a warm shawl, and returned. The man was still bent forward. I didn’t see his face. He was asleep, and what I saw is not describable. A bit intimidated, I put the shawl around his body and left.

I was touched. When I told my partner, he passed by later. The man was sitting upright, wearing my shawl. They had a good conversation. It had been a good day — for the three of us.

A kind gesture means more than warm thoughts. And connection is king.
